Garden Design Ilkley & Wharfedale

Bespoke garden design shaped around your home, garden and the wider landscape

GardenWild creates individual garden designs in Ilkley and across Wharfedale, bringing together thoughtful design and a strong understanding of horticulture and planting.

We believe the best gardens are created by looking at the whole picture — the house, the garden, the surrounding landscape and, most importantly, the people who will enjoy the space.

Whether your garden needs a complete transformation, a new planting scheme or simply some expert direction, we can help you develop a garden that is both beautiful and practical, with planting that will continue to evolve as it matures.

Bespoke Garden Design in Ilkley

No two gardens are the same, and our approach reflects this.

We begin by getting to know your garden and understanding how you would like to use it. Perhaps you need more space for entertaining, a better connection between the house and garden, somewhere peaceful to sit, or simply a more considered approach to the planting.

From there, we develop a design that responds to the individual characteristics of the site.

Gardens that belong to their setting

Ilkley and the surrounding Wharfedale landscape provide a wonderful backdrop for garden design. We like to take inspiration from the character of a place without allowing it to dictate the design. Existing trees, views, boundaries, architecture and the natural landscape can all become part of the story of a garden. An established garden may already have beautiful mature trees or plants that are worth retaining. A newer garden may need structure and planting to help it feel more settled.By understanding what is already there, we can find opportunities to enhance the garden rather than simply replacing everything.

The result is a garden that feels connected to its home and its surroundings while remaining individual to the people who live there.

Planting-led garden design

Plants are central to everything we do at GardenWild. Our horticultural background means we approach planting with an understanding of how plants behave in real gardens, not simply how they look on a plan. We consider the conditions of each site, including light, soil, moisture, aspect and exposure, before selecting plants that will work within the garden. But suitability is only part of the process. We also think about colour, texture, form, scent, movement and seasonal change, bringing different layers of planting together to create a garden that develops throughout the year. Good planting should look beautiful when it is first installed, but it should also have room to grow.

Our Garden Design Process

Consultation

We begin with a conversation about your garden.

We'll talk through what you like about the existing space, what isn't working, how you want to use it and what you'd like to achieve. It's also an opportunity for us to understand your ideas, preferences and priorities.

Complete Garden Design

For a garden that needs a complete new direction, we can develop a comprehensive design that brings all the elements together.

From the overall layout and circulation to planting, materials and focal points, we consider how each part of the garden works with the next.

Understanding gardens

Before developing a design, we look carefully at the site.

We consider the existing layout, aspect, soil, planting, boundaries and relationship between the garden and your home. Understanding the conditions of a garden is essential to creating a design that will work in practice.

Planting Design

Planting is considered as an integral part of the garden rather than something added at the end.

We develop planting schemes that combine structure, colour, texture and seasonal interest, choosing plants that are appropriate for the conditions of your garden.

Bringing the garden to life

Once the design is agreed, we can provide the information and support needed to turn the plans into a finished garden. Our soft landscaping team can install planting plans carefully and professionally, giving your plants the best possible start.

Creating gardens for the way you live

A garden should be more than something to look at. We consider how you move through the space, where you might sit on a summer evening, how children might use the garden and what you want to see from the windows of your home.

For some clients, the garden may be primarily somewhere to entertain. For others, it might be a quiet retreat, a place to grow plants or simply somewhere to enjoy nature.

These everyday details influence the design just as much as the planting and materials. Our aim is to create outdoor spaces that feel natural to use and enjoyable to live with.

Testimonials

  • "I whole heartedly recommend Liz and her team. They have done a great job in my garden and were a real pleasure to work with. Nothing was too much trouble and changes of mind were taken in their stride. Liz and her team are really knowledgeable and I’m already looking at the next project for her.

  • Liz sourced and planted many, many plants for my garden, following a detailed design. The plants she sourced are of an exceptional quality and the finished garden is wonderful. Leading up to completing the project Liz's communication was excellent and her after-care has be just as good. She has answered questions about how I care for certain plants and visited the garden to review the health of some of the plants. She quickly diagnosed that they needed more water - she was right!

    Gary

  • Liz and Tom did a grand job choosing the plants for our coastal to cottage themed garden areas. We now have a beautiful mix of grasses, coastal plants and herbs. Already we have bees and butterflies visiting our garden. The planting creates interest through the seasons. They have also replied promptly to any queries we have had. Thank you Liz and Tom
